Infinity Learning is an independent tutoring service. We are not Cambridge International Education, we are not the British Council, and we do not register candidates for exams. This guide summarises official information in our own words so you can ask better questions. Always confirm current details on the official pages linked below.
The short answer
Cambridge O Level and Cambridge IGCSE are two separate qualifications, both aimed at students aged 14 to 16. Cambridge describes them as directly comparable, of equal rigour and equivalent grade for grade. They have different names, different syllabus codes and, in some subjects, different assessment options.
Which one your child takes is usually decided by where the school or exam centre is, not by family preference.
Side by side
Who they are for
- O Level: a Cambridge upper secondary qualification for 14 to 16 year olds. Cambridge says schools can choose from more than 40 O Level subjects.
- IGCSE: also for 14 to 16 year olds, with more than 70 subjects. Cambridge says its standards are aligned with the GCSE taken in England.
How they are graded
Cambridge explains that IGCSE has eight grades, A to G, while O Level has six, A to E. The two scales are broadly aligned. The extra grades at the lower end of IGCSE exist to recognise more of the students who sit it.
How they are assessed
Both are assessed at the end of the course. Cambridge's overview pages list written, oral and practical components for O Level, and written, oral, coursework and practical components for IGCSE. In practice this means some subjects offer a coursework option at IGCSE that O Level does not. In several subjects the content and papers are shared. Check the syllabus for your child's subject rather than assuming.
Syllabus codes
Every Cambridge subject has a syllabus code, and the code is how you tell the two qualifications apart. Cambridge lists, for example, O Level Mathematics (Syllabus D) as 4024 and O Level Physics as 5054, while the matching IGCSE codes use different numbers (the Mathematics IGCSE is 0580). Always quote the code when you speak to an exam centre.
Why availability matters more than preference
Cambridge divides the world into six administrative zones. The zone of a school or exam centre affects which exam timetable it uses and which version of the qualification it can offer:
- Cambridge says O Level is not available for examination in administrative zones 1, 2 and 6.
- Zone 4 continues to offer O Level.
- Zones 3 and 5 are covered by an announced phased move from O Level to IGCSE, described below.
The Cambridge zones page we read works as a lookup rather than a simple country list, and exam centres know their zone. If you are not sure, ask your exam centre which qualification and syllabus code it offers for each subject.
The announced move from O Level to IGCSE
Cambridge has announced that from June 2028 it will begin moving schools in administrative zones 3 and 5 from O Level to equivalent IGCSE qualifications, in phases. This does not mean O Levels are disappearing everywhere:
- It applies to zones 3 and 5 only. Cambridge says it will keep running O Levels in zone 4.
- In the first phase, Cambridge says the content and assessment of the O Level and IGCSE versions are identical and only the qualification name and syllabus code change.
- Cambridge's notice names the first subjects as Accounting, Additional Mathematics, Business, Economics and Literature in English, with a second phase that includes Environmental Management, Food and Nutrition and Mathematics D (the 4024 syllabus).
- A candidate cannot enter both the O Level and IGCSE version of the same subject in the same exam series.
One point to confirm: Cambridge's own notice shows June 2028 for the first phase in its phase table, but one answer in its FAQ refers to the June 2029 series. We cannot resolve that for you, so confirm the exact start and subject dates with Cambridge or your exam centre before making plans. See the official notice linked at the end.
What this means for your family
- Do not switch mid-course without asking. If your child has started an O Level subject, ask the exam centre what happens in their zone and when.
- Plan around the syllabus code, not the name. Study materials, past papers and exam entries all use the code.
- Private candidates should ask first. Which qualification you can enter depends on the centre you register with, so ask before you buy books or start a course. Our guide to preparing for O Levels as a private candidate explains the steps.
- Recognition. Cambridge says O Level and IGCSE lead to qualifications accepted by leading universities and employers worldwide. Individual universities set their own requirements, so check the ones your child is aiming for.
How tutoring fits in
A tutor can help your child understand the syllabus, practise exam-style questions and plan revision, whether the paper says O Level or IGCSE. Tutoring does not enter your child for exams, and Infinity Learning does not register candidates. We will always ask which syllabus code your child is following so we can look for a tutor with the right subject focus, subject to tutor availability, and your child can start with one free introductory trial class.
Questions parents ask
Is an IGCSE better than an O Level?
Cambridge describes them as directly comparable qualifications of equal rigour, and the choice is normally made by the school or centre.
Can my child take both in the same subject?
Not in the same exam series. Cambridge says a candidate cannot enter both versions of a subject in the same series, although different subjects can be taken in the same series.
Will my child's O Level result be accepted if the school moves to IGCSE?
Cambridge calls the two equivalent grade for grade and says the move is a change of name and syllabus code in the first phase. For specific university or visa requirements, ask the institution directly.
Which zone are we in?
Ask your exam centre or use the lookup on Cambridge's administrative zones page. We do not guess.
