Announced change: O Level to IGCSE in some regions
Cambridge has announced that from June 2028 it will begin moving schools in administrative zones 3 and 5 from O Level to equivalent IGCSE qualifications, in phases. This is not the end of O Levels worldwide: Cambridge says it will keep running O Levels in zone 4, and O Level is not offered in zones 1, 2 and 6. Cambridge's own pages show June 2028 in some places and June 2029 in another, so confirm the exact dates and subjects with Cambridge or your exam centre.

The basics
What Cambridge O Level Is
Cambridge O Level is an international qualification from Cambridge International Education, part of Cambridge University Press & Assessment. It sits in Cambridge's upper secondary stage and is aimed at students aged 14 to 16.
Cambridge says schools can choose from more than 40 O Level subjects in any combination, that assessment takes place at the end of the course and includes written, oral and practical components, and that O Level leads to qualifications accepted by leading universities and employers worldwide.
Typical stage
Where O Level Fits in a Student's Education
O Level normally covers the last two years before a student moves on to Cambridge International AS and A Level or another route. Cambridge describes it as excellent preparation for Cambridge Advanced. Students younger than 14 usually follow Cambridge's primary and lower secondary stages, which end with the Checkpoint assessments.
- Primary and lower secondary: see our Cambridge Checkpoint guide.
- Upper secondary, ages 14 to 16: O Level or IGCSE.
- Advanced: AS and A Level, typically after O Level or IGCSE.
O Level and IGCSE
How O Level Differs From IGCSE
Cambridge describes O Level and IGCSE as directly comparable qualifications of equal rigour, equivalent grade for grade. They are still separate qualifications with different names and syllabus codes. IGCSE has eight grades (A* to G) and O Level has six (A* to E), and in some subjects the IGCSE assessment adds coursework options.
Which one a student sits depends on the Cambridge administrative zone of the school or centre, not on family preference. Our guide to O Levels versus IGCSE explains this in more detail.
Choosing subjects
Subject Selection and Syllabus Codes
Each Cambridge subject has a syllabus code, and the code is the safest way to be sure you and your tutor mean the same syllabus. Examples from Cambridge's list include Mathematics (Syllabus D) 4024, Physics 5054, Chemistry 5070, Biology 5090 and English Language 1123.
Choose subjects with your school or exam centre, check that each is open to the way your child is entering (some options are not open to private candidates), and write the code beside each subject on your study plan.
Codes and availability change. Check the official subject list before you rely on a code.
Examination preparation
How Students Prepare Well
A tutor can set this up with your child, explain difficult topics and check practice answers. A tutor cannot sit the exam for the student or guarantee a grade.
- Use the syllabus as a checklist and divide each subject into topics.
- Practise short exam-style questions soon after learning a topic.
- Learn the command words (such as analyse, compare and evaluate) so you know what a question is asking for. Cambridge publishes a guide.
- Keep a mistakes log and revisit it regularly.
- In the last months, work through full timed papers and review them carefully.
Private candidates
Private Candidates and Who Registers the Exam
Cambridge describes a route for students who do not attend a Cambridge school. Private candidates register through an approved Cambridge exam centre or provider, not directly with Cambridge, and in some countries a British Council office is one such route. The centre decides which subjects it accepts, and Cambridge notes that the centre pays Cambridge's fees and may charge extra costs.
Registering, paying and attending are the responsibility of the family and the candidate. Tutoring is separate: Infinity Learning does not register candidates and is not a British Council agent.

Past papers and mark schemes
Where Official Practice Material Comes From
Cambridge lists past papers, examiner reports and specimen papers for each subject. Its study-resources page says they are held in its School Support Hub, which needs a school login, and that teachers can download them for free. Private candidates may therefore need their exam centre's help to obtain them.
Cambridge's page does not describe mark schemes, so ask your centre what marking guidance is available to you. Please do not share or sell exam materials, and we do not republish them.
Personalised tuition
How Personalised Tuition Helps
One-to-one lessons let a tutor spend time where your child is stuck, move quickly through what they already know and build a revision plan around the syllabus and the exam series. We look for a tutor with the right subject focus and ask for the syllabus code so we can confirm we are teaching the right course.
Subjects we arrange for O Level students, subject to tutor availability, include Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Business, Accounting, Economics, English, Urdu, Islamiyat, History and Geography. Tell us your subject and level and we will say honestly what we can arrange.
Free trial
How the Free Trial Works
Every new student is offered one free introductory trial class, online or, in Faisalabad and Lahore, at home. We confirm tutor availability with you before anything is arranged. For online tuition, fees are confirmed after the trial and paid monthly in advance to Infinity Learning's official company account. For home tuition, parent and tutor arrange continuing lessons directly after placement.
