Infinity Learning is an independent tutoring service. We are not Cambridge International Education, we are not the British Council, and we do not register candidates for exams. This guide summarises official information in our own words so you can ask better questions. Always confirm current details on the official pages linked below.
This guide is for parents in the UAE, including families in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman, whose children study Cambridge qualifications without being at a Cambridge school. It summarises what the British Council's UAE pages say so that you know what to look for. We cannot give current dates, fees or document lists, because they change every exam series, and the British Council's own pages are the only reliable source.
How the pieces fit together
- Cambridge sets the syllabuses and exams. It says private candidates register through an approved exam centre or provider, not directly with Cambridge, and that in some countries a British Council office is one such route.
- The British Council in the UAE publishes registration information for candidates. Its page, "Exam registration for candidates", covers school exams from Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel and Oxford International AQA.
- You and your child are responsible for choosing subjects, registering correctly, paying on time, supplying the documents and attending the exams.
- A tutor supports study. A tutor is not part of the registration process.
The registration steps the British Council describes
The British Council presents registration as three steps. We summarise them here, and the official page remains the authority.
- Register online. Complete the registration form on the British Council's School Exams Registration System, with a valid email address, because all communication about your registration goes there.
- Pay. Fees are listed on the registration system, and the page says registration is not processed until you have paid. It also says payment can be made in cash or by card at British Council centres in the UAE, and that registering after the normal stage can carry a penalty fee. Read the British Council's refund policy before you pay.
- Send your documents and wait for confirmation. After registering and paying online, you email documents to the British Council centre where you will sit the exams. The page lists, for example, a copy of the valid Emirates ID or passport used to register and a previous statement of results if you are retaking. A "No Objection Certificate" is listed for school candidates registering with the British Council. You then receive a Statement of Entry and venue information, which the page says arrives about three weeks before the exams.
The page also says that changes to an entry must be made by visiting the local British Council office, and that a service charge applies.
Read the candidate declaration carefully
The British Council publishes a declaration for candidates. The version we read on 18 October 2026 is worth reading in full before you register. Among other things it:
- asks you to confirm which of two situations applies: you are not currently registered at a UAE school recognised by the Ministry of Education, or you are at a recognised school and have supplied a No Objection Certificate from that school;
- lists documents to submit within three working days of registering online, including a child protection form for candidates aged 18 and below;
- says fees are neither refundable nor carried forward to a later session; and
- states that a private candidate's certificate will not be endorsed by the Ministry of Education and Youth, and that the candidate will not be able to continue studies in any private school in the UAE.
That last point matters if your child may want to return to a UAE school. We are reporting what the British Council's document says, not interpreting it. If your child's schooling plans depend on it, confirm the current position with the British Council and the relevant education authority in writing before you pay. The declaration can be updated, so use the current version from the British Council page.
A checklist for parents
1. Read the official page and the dates page first
Open the British Council UAE candidates page and its registration dates page (both linked below). Check the exam series you are aiming for. Do not rely on a flyer or a download from an earlier series, because its dates will be out of date.
2. Confirm which Cambridge qualification you can enter
The version of a qualification a centre offers can depend on the Cambridge administrative zone. Some students are entered for O Level and others for IGCSE. Ask the British Council which syllabus code applies to each subject. Our O Levels vs IGCSE guide explains the difference.
3. Check subject and component eligibility
Cambridge says some syllabuses or options are not open to private candidates and that you must be able to meet the full assessment requirements, such as practical or speaking components. Ask about each subject on your child's list.
4. Plan around the correct timetable
Cambridge publishes exam timetables by series and administrative zone, and says candidates must use the timetable for their zone. The British Council also lists the timetable for the current series on its page.
5. Keep records
Keep copies of everything you submit, proof of payment and your child's entry details. If something looks wrong, contact the British Council straight away, and remember that amendments are handled at the local office.
Fees and deadlines
Fees and deadlines are listed by the British Council for each series, and late entries cost more. We do not copy them here. Check the official page for the series you want, add the deadline to your calendar and leave a margin.
Who is responsible for what
- Registration, fees, documents, ID and exam attendance: you and your child, through the British Council.
- Study support: a tutor, a school or your own learning.
- Official exam rules, results and reviews: Cambridge and the British Council.
Infinity Learning is an independent tutoring service. We are not a British Council agent, we do not register candidates and we cannot promise any exam outcome.
How online tutoring helps UAE families
For students preparing privately, a tutor can turn a syllabus into a weekly plan, explain difficult topics, check practice answers and help with exam technique. Online lessons suit families spread across the emirates, and the UAE is only one hour behind Pakistan, which keeps scheduling simple. Tell us the subject and syllabus code and which exam series you are aiming for, and we will say honestly what we can arrange, subject to tutor availability. Your child can start with one free introductory trial class.
Questions parents ask
Can the British Council register my child for any Cambridge subject?
Not necessarily. Cambridge says some syllabuses are not open to private candidates, so check each subject on the official page or with the British Council.
Where do I find this series' deadline?
On the British Council UAE registration dates page. Cambridge's own timetable page shows the exam timetable for each zone.
Does a private-candidate certificate affect schooling in the UAE?
The British Council's candidate declaration, in the version we read, says it will not be endorsed by the Ministry of Education and Youth and that the candidate will not be able to continue studies in any private school in the UAE. Read the current declaration and confirm with the British Council and the education authority before you register.
Does tutoring include registration?
No. Tutoring supports learning. Registration is arranged by you through the British Council.
